  1. Prehypertension: 120-129/<80mmHg
  2. Hypertension stage 1: 130-139/80-89mmHg
  3. Hypertension stage 2: >140/>90mmHg
  4. Hypertension stage 3: >180/>120mmHg

Hypertension best practices

  1. Most people with hypertension have no symptoms. Screen all adults for hypertension.
  2. Measure blood pressure the right way, right time.
  3. Use a good quality blood pressure monitor.
  4. Treat all patients whose blood pressure readings are greater than 140/90mmHg.
  5. Start treatment with medications on the same day if blood pressure is above 160/100mmHg.
  6. Recommend lifestyle management in addition to medicines for hypertension.
  7. Use once a day medication to improve treatment adherence.
  8. Explain the benefits of blood pressure control and risk of not taking medications.
  9. Follow patients up to ensure blood pressure control.
